Giuseppe Zammit and Marianna Bonnici

The extended information which I
hold for all of the children of Giuseppe and
Marianna can be found below.
Obviously there are a few gaps in the
information I have, so if you are connected and
can help out with this information then please
get in touch.
The surname Zammit
As
a Maltese surname Zammit is of a number of
possible origins. In the first place, this name
may be a patronymic origin being derived from
the personal name of the father of the initial
bearer. Otherwise, the surname Zammit may be
derived from the Hebrew and Aramaic personal
name Zammit which is derived from Sam itself a
diminutive form of Samuel, from the Hebrew
Shemuel meaning 'peace'. The 'it' may reflect
the Hebrew adjectival ending and thus the name
may also signify 'pertaining to peace' and
perhaps indicating one of a peaceful nature.
Zammit may also be derived from the Semitic
(Arabic and Hebrew) 'sami' meaning 'to hear' and
in fact the root word of the personal name Simon
or Shimon. Finally, Zammit may be derived from 'zam'
itself derived from the Arabic 'zamr' (Maltese
is linguistically and structurally an Arabic
language) the name of a lube or musical
instrument. It should be noted that Zammit is
also found outside the Island of Malta. As an
East Ashkenazi surname it is derived from the
Yiddish Zamit which is the name for Samogitia,
an area of Lithuania. The Zammits have always
held high position in Maltese society with
bearers holding a number of illustrious itiles
including that of Tesoriere which was granted in
1529. The surname was written either as Zammit
and even as Zamit, and this is evident from a
1417 document still existing in Malta. besides
that, although a few Zammit were actually given
high positions in Maltese society, it is also
true that because the surname is so well
distributed, the bearers of this surname
encompass all levels of Maltese society.
The surname Bonnici
This
Italian surname of BONNICI was originally
derived from the Latin personal name of BONUS, a
nickname for a good, and kind person. The name
has numerous variants which include LEBON, BUENO,
BONO, BONITO, BONIS and BONUCCI. Surnames having
a derivation from nicknames form the broadest
and most miscellaneous class of surnames,
encompassing many different types of origin. The
most typical classes refer adjectivally to the
general physical aspect of the person concerned,
or to his character. Many nicknames refer to a
man's size or height, while others make
reference to a favoured article of clothing or
style of dress. Many surnames derived from the
names of animals and birds. In the Middle Ages
ideas were held about the characters of other
living creatures, based on observation, and
these associations were reflected and reinforced
by large bodies of folk tales featuring animals
behaving as humans. The name was borne by a
minor 3rd century Christian saint who was
martyred at Rome with eleven companions under
the Emperor Vespasian. It was adopted as a given
name partly in his honour and partly because of
the transparently well-omened meaning. Emililio
De Bono (1866-1944) was the Italian Fascist
politician and general, born in Cassano d'Adda.
He was quadrumvir in Mussolini's march on Rome
in 1922, and governor of Tripolitania in 1925,
colonial secretary in 1939, and commanded the
Italian forces invading Abyssinia (1935). He
voted against Mussolini in the Fascist Supreme
Council in 1943 and was summarily tried and
executed as a traiter in Verona. Edward Francis
De Bono, born in 1933 is the psychologist and
author. He took a degree in medicine at the
Royal University of Malta, then went as Rhodes
scholar to Christ Church College, Oxford, where
he read psychology. The origins of Italian
surnames are not clear, and much work remains to
be done on medieval Italian records. It seems
that fixed bynames, in some cases hereditary,
were in use in the Venetian Republic by the end
of the 10th century. The typical Italian surname
endings are 'i' and 'o', the former being
characteristic of northern Italy. The singular
form 'o' is more typical of southern Italy. There
are numerous other variants. In the archives the
records find a Bonici family from Malta who
originated in Florence and later settled in
Malta, where members were awarded the title of
Baron of Culeia.
